The Outreach
The big
problem at hand is that many people pre-judge other races, cultures and genders
different from them. The main focus of this project was to express, how people
are viewed verses, how they want to be viewed. Not only is this a national
problem but also an international problem. Many races and cultures are
discriminated against because of the way media has portrayed people throughout
the world.
This
problem does not just stop there it continues to poison our minds giving people
a stigma about ones lifestyle and view toward life. This in return creates
communication barriers between people. Some of this stigma can be removed by
becoming educated on different races, cultures and their beliefs. Also, another
way this stigma can be removed by surrounding your self with other people from
different backgrounds and ethnicities.
Other
ways to get tuned in is to become apart of a worldwide chatting site for
example: Facebook or Twitter. Facebook being one that I am more familiar with
is one of the places I decided to place my digital media project. The digital
media project that was created by Ronny Latimore and I, Stevie Lynch was
created to attract and target several different audiences. The production was a
collaboration of different profiles focusing in on one individual. This project
was then prompted and edited and placed on Facebook and YouTube Profilesofme . Both websites attract a variety of different
audiences.
The process of creating this video took the
help of others expertise and opinions. This clearly points out the statement,
Henry Jenkins makes that “Do It Yourself rarely means Do It Alone. This is
how much of the information we as individuals receive is shared. Many of those
informing us World Wide Web users of resources and information on a particular
subject are from all different races and cultures. We as the people have been
empowered to take back control of what we read, see, or listen to. By places
this production on a site that attracts many different ages, cultures and races;
this project reaches people from all walks of life. This then results in many
people outside of one targeted audience being reached.
We as
the authors and creators hold the power in our hands to distribute this media
to many different audiences by placing the project where the targeted audience
frequents often. This is a prime example of the difference between Web 1.0 (not
having control) and Web 2.0 (having a voice and control over the production).
By having a voice not matter where you are in the world your opinions, morals,
and values can be heard.
This
distribution of this production does not stop there but continues on through
blog post or word of mouth. This gives a greater opportunity for the message to
be spread to others throughout the world. In fact, after posting the video on
Facebook, many friends that had never seen the video “liked” or responded to
the post with positive feedback either verbally or through blog. The end result
has been that most relate to one or more of the different individuals presented
in the film. Which gives me the idea that we as individuals are not to much
different from each than we think we are. We all just want our voices to be
heard.
